Scott Ainslie, London’s Green Party MEP, is looking for a creative, enthusiastic and strategic assistant to help him work towards these goals.
As Brussels-based Accredited Parliamentary Assistant, you will manage Scott's work on the European Parliament's Constitutional Affairs committee (AFCO) - focused on building a fairer, more open and democratic European Union.
The ideal candidate will have experience of working in the European Parliament, a passion for democracy, transparency and the rule of law, and - of course - know the UK and EU political landscape inside out. You'll have strong writing skills, a friendly and diplomatic manner, and enjoy working in a small and ideas-driven team.
Job description
1. Assisting in the running of Scott Ainslie's Brussels office by answering the phone, updating the calendar, checking the Outlook inbox and answering emails when required.
2. Managing Scott’s work on the Constitutional Affairs committee (AFCO), including preparing briefings, attending meetings and liaising with secretariat and group advisors. Also taking responsibility for his work as part of the Transparency and Democracy Working Group.
3. Accompanying Scott to meetings, taking notes and undertaking follow-up; attending meetings on Scott’s behalf and reporting back.
4. Researching and writing briefings relating to policy issues, speeches and media appearances; writing official letters and comment pieces relating to AFCO or transparency and democracy issues.
5. Assisting with the organisation of meetings and events, including booking rooms and registering and signing in guests.
6. Assisting with delegation and intergroup work as necessary.
7. Liaising with Scott’s Brussels and London-based staff as necessary.
8. Other tasks, including working on a broad range of environmental, social and political issues, as required.
Person Specification
• Educated to degree level.
• Knowledge of the workings of the European Parliament; previous experience preferred.
• Experience relating to constitutional affairs and transparency issues is desirable.
• Knowledge of and interest in European and British politics.
• Interest in Green politics and commitment to progressive values.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Friendly, personable manner and a sense of diplomacy.
• Good IT skills.
• Fluent written and spoken English, other European languages skills are an advantage.
Other relevant information:
• Starting date as soon as possible. Contract until 31st January 2020, with the possibility of extension depending on the UK’s membership of the EU.
• Salary: €2155 - €3454/month (dependant on experience)
• Working hours will not exceed 37.5 hours per week. Any additional time (to be agreed in advance) can be taken as time off in lieu.
